Our "working hypothesis" remains just that: A rough attempt, possibly wrong, probably at least imperfect, at fitting together the pieces of the puzzle. We'll gladly consider anything--no suggestion is too extreme to merit examination--but we're cautious about receiving anything as gospel truth.

In that spirit, we've been slow about reaching the conclusion that America is now a fascist dictatorship. We've been tempted to declare Bush the American Mussolini, but have held off until now.

Finally, today, things have gone too far. As Bush effectively suspends habeas corpus by ordering a US citizen to be held indefinitely in a military brig--without benefit of counsel or trial--even the Establishment-mouthpiece Washington Post is declaring that "nobody's constitutional rights are safe."

This is over-the-Rubicon, folks. This unelected, judicially installed, mentally deficient bozo now no longer merely threatens to destroy America--he's done it. Fait accompli. Bye, bye America. Here at metaconspiracy we're seriously considering trading in our US passports and starting life again as foreign nationals. Four years and a language proficiency test to go, and we'll be citizens of Korea. Which, unfortunately, keeps us within the pale of Empire. Though how much longer the US military remains welcome here is very much an open question.

So today we received this e-mail from out of the blue. We won't call it unsolicited, since it is possible that at some point in the past we requested updates while visiting www.9-11.co.uk. Possible. You know how it is, right? Three o'clock in the morning, baggy-eyed, goofing around online.

Anyway, we'd never heard from these guys before. Not once. Then this morning they send us an email authored by a certain Barbara Hartwell. (Yes, we'd heard the name before, and had even been to her site once or twice. Hartwell claims to be an "MK Ultra survivor," while admitting to having no hard evidence. And who knows? Maybe she is.) At all events, the point of the e-mail is to warn us of the "unstable mental condition, apparent paranoid delusions, and bizarre behavior" of Ranger Rick, publisher of a website called The Fifth Horseman. Since we've been faithful readers for months now, and have praised the site to the skies here at metaconspiracy, we take slightly more than a casual interest in Hartwell's allegations. Seems she's playing hardball, too. There's talk of possible legal action against Rick (on grounds of "libel" against Hartwell), complaints to Geocities (hosts of RR's site), etc.

Our initial response was to ignore this. In fact, we deleted the e-mail. Ranger Rick is simply too gosh darn on target about too many things. The site consistently delivers meticulously researched, independently verifiable, artfully written pieces on all aspects of the Intelligence/Mafia underground. It's a site that speaks for itself, really. Absolutely in a category of its own.

The remarkable tie-in to our last post is what motivated us to retrieve Hartwell's rant from the trash bin (where it will soon return) and risk a descent from the Meta to which this site aspires (in an admittedly amateur way) to the Micro. Last summer while visiting Fukuoka, Japan for a few days we narrowly missed seeing Pearl Harbor on the big screen. A scant six weeks later, the US propaganda machine was trumpeting the news that the events of 9/11 constituted a "second Pearl Harbor"--prompting us to wonder about timing. Sheer coincidence here, or was the movie launched as part of a psychological conditioning campaign to prepare the public for what was to come?

Now we find ourselves asking similar questions of A Beautiful Mind, which we saw here in Seoul over the weekend. None too subtly, the moral this flick delivers is that belief in conspiracy and/or cryptogovernment equals insanity. Seeing Big Brother, you say? Having dealings with the CIA? Time to drug-up, dope-out, destroy that beautiful mind of yours, reconnect with family, basically stop thinking and assume the life of a harmless automaton.

Coincidence again? Here we have precisely the prophylactic our leaders would, presumably, most like to employ against independent thought, i.e., serious investigation of 9/11, the Afghan campaign and coming sequels, skulduggery in high places generally. So who cooks up these things, anyway? Hollywood, as we all know, has a rep for being "liberal," anti-authoritarian. Government, meanwhile--especially government of the crypto variety--has long evinced a morbid desire to bend the movie-making business to its own sordid ends. Yes, we're alluding directly to The Hollywood Ten, Donald Ogden Stewart, et al. The history of those black days has become an open book to us today, but just what the heck is going on now? We're forming a strong inference here that Hollywood is being used as a mass-conditioning propaganda tool by the supremos of the (crypto)elite. Too bizarre! It was just yesterday we put up a post on what Big Brother is doing to subversive sites. (We use "subversive" for want of a better word. Perhaps questioning, reasoning, thinking, or even sentient would do as well.) And now this. Tried checking in with The Fifth Horseman just now and found ourselves automatically redirected to . . . the FBI!

Can't help but be reminded of the ruckus we stirred up at the University of California a little over a year ago. Our employment package--for work as a lousy English department teaching assistant, no less--required of us a signed oath to uphold and defend both the US and California state constitutions. (Kiss my ass, Sacramento. Evergreen State of Washington forever!) Anyway, we filled out the forms and signed our name as "J. Edgar Hoover." Said forms were promptly returned to us for a "correct" signature. Much as we'd like to say that we stood our ground, friends, we caved. Needed that paycheck too badly. What truly disturbed and disheartened us though was that we found ourselves vigorously opposed in this quixotic show of Don't Tread on Me-ism by, would you believe, well nigh the entire sorry-assed pack of posturing, self-styled "radicals" in said English department. Opposed too by a submoronic graduate advisor who, Ivy League doctorate notwithstanding, proved chronically incapable of spelling polysyllabic words or managing--gasp!--subject-verb agreement. All of which is one of many reasons we're now proud to call ourselves expatriates for life.

But not, if you'll allow the play on words, expatriots. Suck on that, Mr. Alphabet Soup Man!

It's time to get angry, folks. Our current "Dear Leader" clearly wasn't joking when he told the United Nations that he "wouldn't tolerate conspiracy theories." We're seeing daily evidence now, in the form of hacked and otherwise tampered-with websites.

Thought crime, anyone?

Don't know about you, but we're starting to feel a bit lonely here at metaconspiracy. Shucks, it's been what, over a week now since we've been visited by our friends from Reston, VA. Is there no love? Or maybe this site just ain't subversive enough to merit regular monitoring.

Unlikeliest war scenario we've ever heard, courtesy of a neighborhood pal. North Korea attacks Japan. (OK, so far, so plausible.) South Korea then enters the fray . . . by attacking Japan itself. This, we're told, was the premise of a recently popular (South) Korean novel. Unlikely sounding . . . if you've never been to Korea, that is. The anti-Japan animus here is astonishingly pervasive and intense. Mention North Korea and most Seoulites will simply sigh. "Ah, yes, the North. We've had our differences with them, to be sure. But we are the same people, after all. And in ten years' time we'll be reunified anyway." Mention Japan, and you'll be treated to an endless diatribe on Japanese viciousness and mendacity. The strictly derivative nature of Japanese culture. The inferiority of everything Japanese to everything Korean. (This from a shopkeeper in Itaewon: "Korean eelskin, number one world quality. Japanese eelskin, very, very poor.") Bush Jr., we reckon here at metaconspiracy, will be in for the surprise of his life if he thinks he can galvanize his presumed South Korean "allies" into undertaking a war against the North. Or even allowing airstrikes from Southern bases. Guess again, George. In a pinch, as the pop fiction war scenario suggests, you might just find North and South Korea . . . on the same side.

Yes, friends, it's been over a week. Thought we'd vanished? Not a chance! Most of our time goes into teaching and editing, something we do six or seven days a week now. Not a bad job, either, as they go. We live a city which is friendly, safe, prodigiously rich in opportunities for entertainment and exploration. One of the world's great cities, in our estimation, though you'll never hear it described as such anywhere but here. Way too overlookable. Off the beaten track. And wait--did we just say safe? We're sitting a mere 18 miles away from what Bush Jr. has recently designated the Axis of Evil. That's right, friends, we're in Seoul, Korea. Love this place! OK, so the weather sucks. And if you happen to have blond hair and blue eyes, you'd better just get used to being stared at on the subway, in the streets, all day, every day. And asked whether you can "play with chopsticks" for the umpteen-millionth time. But that's all right. Where else are we gonna pull in 25 bucks an hour with nothing more than an English degree as credentials? Be called "esteemed teacher," get bowed to, saluted by armed guards, set up on blind dates with beauty contest winners . . .

Now if only they spoke English, these Korean beauty queens! But that's where we come in, right?

So another long workweek has come to a close and it's one o'-clock in the morning here in the good old Hacker PC room. With a five-day vacation ahead of us! Hananim kamsahamnida for the Lunar New Year holiday! Five whole days without teaching or editing. Gee, maybe it's time we gave a little attention to good old metaconspiracy.

So we did a little research earlier tonight and got to wondering about what seems a very special address: 4676 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey, California. Do a Google search on "4676 Admiralty Way," check out some of the links (of which there are hundreds--hundreds) and see what we mean. This is home to ICANN and the USC Information Sciences Institute. Some people we're beginning to wonder about. As in . . . are they sabotaging subversive websites? Well, let's just say we wonder. Five whole days here to investigate, folks. Check back for more.

Meanwhile, we'll be reading what the people over at icannwatch.org have to say. We'll be checking out one of the sites that Google search led to, www.amazing.com, and wondering (that word again!) in particular about the state of the very buildings in question out there on Admiralty Way (www.amazing.com/building). And then there's the Paper. "An Empirical Study of the Relation Between Abstracts, Extracts, and the Discourse Structure of Texts." Available at a URL too long to copy here. Tedious as heck, but with a mighty interesting roster at the top of the page. Let's see, we've got co-authors at the following very exclusive addresses: Department of Defense, Ft. Meade, MD (hmm. . . Hmmmmm . . . some kind of collaboration going on here?

Well, like we said, we wonder. And no, Johnny and Suzie, "like" is not a conjunction. We're English teachers, folks, like we were saying.

And before we forget, here's a handy little utility. Something you may just find useful one day. Maybe you've got a website of your own. You've got a tracker (like the one at the bottom of this page, the boxy little number which tells you we don't have many friends). So you check your stats, and what you get is a lot of gobbledygook-computerese about your visitors. And IP numbers. Like . . . 151.201.63.37. Just as a for instance. So who the heck are these guys? Inquiring minds want to know, right?

So here's what you do. You run a reverse IP lookup. This means heading over to www.amnesi.com/hostinfo/ipinfo.jhtml. Where you enter that IP. And click. And back comes your answer. Hello, Reston, Virginia!

If you've done much reading in current history, you'll know that the US (crypto)government will spare no effort to make sure that the "right guys" get in power--and stay there--throughout the world. No country is too small or insignificant. From Guatemala to Indonesia to Italy and Greece and Chile . . . governments have gone down, leaders been assassinated, populations decimated, all in the interest of maintaining US world hegemony. Total death count in the millions. All extensively documented in books available at your local library, on the Web, and elsewhere.

So at some point you've gotta ask yourself: If they care that much about who holds the reins of power in, say, Tegucigalpa, are they likely to sit by and simply watch as the US electorate chooses its own president?

Votescam.com, James and Kenneth Collier's site, blows it all away. Any remaining delusions we may have entertained, that is, that the "vote" was ever really "counted" in the first place. Heard these guys on Pacifica radio a year or two ago when we lived in hell--er, Riverside, California. Chilling stuff, this. But honestly now, are we surprised?

The real terrorists: Opus Dei and their Christian Dominionist allies? S. R. Shearer takes on these pietistic bozos in his essay "Welcome to the New 'National Security State'" over at endtimesnetwork.com. Gotta say that we don't quite, altogether subscribe to the site's theology--but they do supply one heck of an antidote to the triumphalist hogswill one sees on too many Xian sites these days.

First, a slightly overdue disclaimer and statement of principles. We can't vouch for the accuracy or truthfulness of the content contained in links. Should go without saying, right? Conspiracy research, by its very nature, takes us into some dark and shadowy places. It tends to raise far more questions than it provides answers. The best of us have been known to follow false leads, bark up wrong trees, exult over red herrings. It happens. And it doesn't necessarily mean that we're a) stupid, or b) disinformation artists. If we're disinforming anyone here at metaconspiracy, it's mostly ourselves. (Have a look at that bottom-of-the-page counter if you don't believe us.) No, folks, this is an honest-to-God attempt to get at the truth about things in general. More particularly, things of a (crypto)governmental nature. Welcome back to metaconspiracy.

Today's topic is the whaddaya know factor. Which takes a bit of explaining.

We cast our minds back to the autumn of 1987. Yours truly had recently "graduated" from US Army basic training at the infamous Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. (Affectionately nicknamed "Fort Lost in the Woods, State of Misery" by its inmates.) Arrived at Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, we were surprised to find ourselves assigned to Arabic language study. Arabic? What about those four years of Russian at the University of Washington? Evidently the army had no use for our Russian. No desire to "retool" that Slavic-studies background with a course in Polish or Ukrainian. We were not alone though. In fact, a plurality of personnel at DLI were assigned to--you guessed it--the Arabic language program. Keep in mind the date. Ronald Reagan was in his second term, still ranting about the "Evil Empire" run by Moscow. Anyone reading Time magazine would have sworn the Cold War was still running at fever pitch. But if the Russkies were Enemy Number One, why the heck did the US military's Arabic-language students outnumber its Russian ones? One wondered. Could the next big war be slated for some part of the Arab world?

So it came as no great surprise to us when, less than four years later, America's biggest war since Vietnam was launched against--who else?--those pesky ragheads in Mesopotamia. Whaddaya know, Saddam invades Kuwait? America constrained to launch a massive invasion against an Arabic-speaking country--whaddaya know? No, we knowed it already. Four years in advance, to be precise. It was simple arithmetic, friends.

We cite this example because it's so darn prosaic. After all, it's not as though we were assigned to the Mid East desk at Langley. Weren't ever privy to any great secrets. In fact, we were at the bottom of the food chain. Lowly PFC, still in training, still waiting for that Top Secret clearance to come through. (It never did. We bailed out of the army before they had time.) Our point here is that just about any old shmo with eyes and ears and a sense of curiosity can ask the simple questions that lead to insight. It doesn't take a clearance, a PhD, connections, any kind of jazz. Just an open mind and a willingness to ask those sometimes all-too-obvious questions.

Such as . . . if steel melts at 1535 degrees Celsius (2795 Fahrenheit), how do we explain the collapse of the WTC in an 800 degree Celsius fire? Whaddaya know now . . . the laws of physics have changed?

Then we have the kid who flies a plane into the Tampa Bank of America building in an apparent copycat attack. These things just happen? Damn kids these days, just can't be trusted? Whaddaya know now again? Trust Daniel Hopsicker, author of the acclaimed Barry and the Boys: The CIA, the Mob, and America's Secret History, to do an honest-to-God investigation of this sad story--something which the mainstream press will too likely never deliver. Add his site, www.madcowprod.com, to your dailies. Here's a man who won't settle for anything less than the truth, and has the courage to go looking for it.

An acquaintance of ours, who passes for an educated sort of fellow, told us of his "disappointment" in a friend who credited a "conspiracy" behind 9/11. As though the intelligent ones among us should know better! Said acquaintance's own reaction to the WTC assault: "I suspected right away that he [Bin Laden] had done it." Whaddaya know--Osama Bin Laden? The man the US media had spent the past several years building up as the latest bogey archnemesis of the Pax Americana?

We never woulda thunk it.

But all right folks, that's enough dark shadows for one afternoon! We now suggest a therapeutic lift of spirits. Let's join Ralph Vaughan Williams in celebrating the day which God has made. Do it here. Do it now. You'll thank us. Really you will.

Our original idea here was to build a site--not necessarily a (we)blog--wherein we examined a hypothetical "metaconspiracy" overarching and encompassing the everyday, bubble-and-squeak, lower-order cons, e.g., 9/11, JFK/RFK/MLK hits, NWO, secret socs, and so on. We're far from alone, of course, in seeing something bigger at play here. Jim Marrs's Rule by Secrecy provides an outstanding recent example of just such "meta" theorizing. It was our dissatisfaction with this book, as much as anything, that got us thinking about an attempt at something better. More compelling, let's say. A tad more stringently argued. Or heck, let's just come right out and say believable.

Then came the notorious events of 9/11. We spent several weeks compulsively searching the Web for anything--anything--which could cast a bit of light on these sinister shadows. Discovered Jeff Rense's site--now a compulsory daily read--and Rayelan's Rumor Mill News. That led to the fantastic Ranger Rick and his own uniquely all-fact, no-theory, originally researched and impeccably honest The Fifth Horseman. Independently, we happened upon something called metascene, a not-to-be-missed blog. Suddenly, there was synthesis. Fact, not theory. Blog, not blat. Call it metaconspiracy.
